MISSING PICTURE
History:
Bryan Stephens and Mick Ketley had worked together before in a band
called The Noblemen, who were originally from Hove near Brighton. When
that band lost some members, they brought in Rodger, who brought in his
friend Barre. Welshman Jimmy Marsh brought in his friend Tomlinson. Tomlinson
was in a group called James Deane & The London Cats during 1965 and
it's possible that James Deane was Jimmy Marsh. Don't know for sure however....
This group didn't record as far as I know and I think are different
from the Motivation that recorded for Direction - ignore what it says in
the Beat Merchants article about the Direction single as it could be untrue.
The band did however work as the house band at the Piper club in Rome for
six months during 1967 according to Tomlinson.
In December 1967, the group changed name to the Penny Peep Show when Marsh and Rodger left and new singer Denny Alexander joined. Barre shifted onto guitar at this point. Stephens had met Alexander in Germany a few years back. The group shortened its name to The Penny Peeps and recorded two singles for Liberty Records during 1968:
Little Man With A Stick/Model Village (LBF15053)
I See The Morning/Curly, The Knight of The Road (LBF15114)
Sometime later that year, the group changed name to Gethsemane and ploughed the blues route. When Barre joined jethro, Tomlinson went to Canada where he has been since.
There is more info on the Penny Peeps in Record Collector 240 - see British psychedelia section.
